The sound of crunching chips echoed through the living room against the voices coming from the glowing television. Further away was the clinking of dishes as they were washed and placed to dry.

Aoba lay on her side upon the couch. Her hair was out of its usual twin-tails and flowing naturally along her back. She was wearing her pink tartan pajamas that was struggling to contain her bulging middle, her belly forcing the bottom of the button-up top almost two inches and gaps were appearing between the buttons, showing off the light skin beneath the soft fabric, with one cap exposing the deepening crater of her belly button.

Aoba was embarrassed to admit it to herself, but she could actually feel her belly resting on the couch, the feeling of it deforming slightly on its side. It was an odd feeling and Aoba was a little ashamed of it to some degree because it meant she was fat. There was no ‘getting fat’ anymore, she was properly plump now.

Aoba rested her left hand on her tummy while her right hand continued to shovel chips into her mouth. She had to admit that there was something appealing to lazing on the couch and stuffing her face, but she wondered what a full day of junking and meals would do to her weight. Her belly was already sticking out six inches at her belly button and she suspected that it would be sticking out even further by the time she went to bed.

Aoba’s hand went into the chip bag again but found nothing within. With a disgruntled groan she shoved the bag off the couch to join the handful of snack packages she had already emptied in the two hours since she had taken to snacking on the couch, and breakfast and been just before that.

“Mom, I’m out of snacks.” Aoba whined towards the kitchen. Normally she wouldn’t act so childishly but the heavier she got the less inclined she was to get up, and besides that her mother was the one insisting she do this.

“Just a moment Aoba, I’m doing some dishes and then I’ll bring some mini donuts for you.” Aoba’s expression morphed into a deliriously happy one. She loved mini donuts and even before all this she could confidently put away dozens of them, and had.

Her mind wandered and she saw herself sat on the couch with untold numbers of packages containing various kinds of mini donuts, shoving handfuls of them into her mouth at a time. “If I could have that, I wouldn’t mind getting fatter.” She whispered dreamily to herself.

The noise coming from the TV drew her attention away from her daydream. She was currently watching a talk show, more of a televised radio show really, but it was suitably entertaining and they were just welcoming their guest.

It was a roughly middle-aged man dressed in an open lab coat with a dress shirt and tie beneath and black trousers. Aoba guessed he was some kind of scientist or doctor. A bit of an unusual guest for a show that typically focused on pop culture. It piqued Aoba’s curiosity enough that her lack of snacks was forgotten and she began to focus on the show.

“Welcome to our show Doctor Hirasawa.” The male host greeted as their guest sat down at their table. “I realize this isn’t the sort of show you might expect to be invited to and our viewers are also probably confused as to why you’re here, but I for one am happy to have you here.”

“As am I.” The hostess was quick to add. “It is a bit strange but from what we know, what you’re here to discuss actually affects a lot of people.”

The doctor folded his hands on the table and managed a polite smile. “Indeed, in fact our research turns most conventional wisdom on its head and brings up some concerning possibilities regarding what we are ingesting.”

Aoba almost groaned. Talk shows were always bringing doctors on to talk about how unhealthy a lot of food was nowadays and how certain diets didn’t work despite many people’s popular beliefs, but something about this made Aoba wonder if it might be about something else. Something about his serious tone, about conventional wisdom being turned on its head.

“Well we were given the basics” The host went on. “But please tell everyone the shocking revelations that your research has uncovered.”

Aoba felt a lump rise in her throat for some reason. She wasn’t a hypochondriac but with her steadily climbing weight she had been getting more concerned about her health, even if she couldn’t recall ever having felt better.

“Mom! Come here quick! Something on this show you have to see!” Aoba heard her mother put down some dishes and stand beside the couch just as the doctor began.

“Well, as odd and contradictory as it sounds, we have encountered a number of people who actually benefit health-wise from eating junk food and in some cases it might even be better for them than fruits and vegetables.”

Aoba’s mouth opened in shock. Just as the doctor said, this was completely against conventional wisdom, even common sense. Junk food was just plain bad for you as far as Aoba knew, with all that sugar, sometimes unnatural chemicals and who knew what else, Aoba was having a hard time using her current logic to rationalize the doctor’s bold statement.

“That seems crazy though.” The hostess said, no doubt echoing the thoughts of the entire audience. “What about junk food could possibly be good for you?”

“Well I never said it was all junk foods.” Hirasawa clarified. “But we have noticed that these individual’s bodies actually do react remarkably well to foods like cheeseburgers, pizza and even sweets like donuts and cakes. I have to be honest that we thought we were going crazy too when we saw the findings of our research.

“I can imagine.” The host said, again echoing the thoughts of the audience. “Maybe you could tell us what exactly this research project was about.”

Aoba felt her mother push her feet, prompting her to pull her legs up and let her mother sit on the opposite end of the couch, causing her legs to bump into her tummy, but Aoba barely noticed that as her attention remained glued to the TV.

“Well” Hirasawa began. “The research started to investigate people who seemed to be oddly underdeveloped, and struggled with productivity. The often looked like children or juveniles despite being adults. Early on after different diets and vitamin supplements didn’t work, we discovered that these people had some kind of odd biological anomalies, mutations of sorts.”

“Mutations?” The host asked. “You mean like the X-men-”

“Not those kinds of mutations.” The doctor said quickly. “These were biological anomalies that changed how many of their bodies worked, mutated as a result of the chemicals and hormones commonly put in many food products. We believe that these mutations occurred before birth.”

“Wow… that’s pretty scary.” The hostess said. “Were they alright?”

“Oh they were perfectly alright, aside from their difficulty focusing, but with the failures we had so far, we decided to focus on just what these mutations were and how they affected their biology, and we discovered that their bodies were able to process sugar and artificial chemicals much better than the normal human body, and even seemed to benefit from them. We’re still not entirely sure how, but we haven’t been able to disprove that they are.”

“What about their underdevelopness and lack of focus?” The hostess asked, though Aoba wasn’t sure ‘underdevelopness’ was a real word. “Were you able to figure that out?”

“Yes. Put simply, once we discovered the mutations and how they processed junk food, we found that they needed things like sugar as much as normal people need vitamins. It was a surprising revelation to say the least but after so many years of research the shock has worn off, but we are constantly discovering new things about this condition.”

“What do you think has caused this mutation doctor?” The host asked. “This seems like a pretty drastic change. Is it really just the stuff we eat that could cause this…. evolution?”

“Not evolution” the doctor said. “Adaptation, albeit a pretty drastic adaptation. We now believe that the changes are not purely because of food, but also due to social influences as well, due to recent developments that we have discovered.”

“Societal?” The hostess asked, no doubt confused how social influences could affect someone’s biology “Some kind of peer pressure?”

The doctor rubbed his chin. “Well, not exactly but that is part of the whole situation. You see, even though they can process sugar and other such normally harmful things far better than most people, the downside is that they can’t get rid of it as quickly. It needs to be more carefully processed so it has to be stored.”

The hostess gasped. “You mean they gain weight faster?”

“Precisely. Their bodies need those elements to be properly healthy but the different elements are processed at different rates. Without going into too much detail, the basic fact is that junk food makes you fat, and these people get fat easier than most ordinary people so the problem is multiplied.”

Aoba winced and peered down at her basketball sized belly, feeling the soft blubber through the fabric of her pyjama shirt. She could even feel her mother’s eyes on her and didn’t dare look at her lest their eyes meet.

“So” The hostess continued. “These people have to get fat to be healthy?”

Doctor Hirasawa sighed. “Well for now, yes. Fortunately they don’t seem to suffer the health defects that result from this. Normally the fatter you get, the harder it is for your heart to pump the blood through your body;however, these people don’t seem to suffer from increased blood pressure or any of the usual health defects associated with weight gain, well other than those caused by having to carry around more physical weight. Swollen ankles are sometimes a problem.”

“Is this where the social part comes in?” The host asked. “Society is often pretty harsh on fat folks.”

The doctor nodded. “Yes, that is one of the issues but it is not the social cause for this phenomenon I mentioned earlier, and if our research is right, people might actually enjoy having these particular sorts of overweight people around.”

The two hosts perked up. “What do you mean?”

“Well it seems that once they reach a certain weight they begin to burn the excess energy reserves they have in their fat by emitting strange pheromones that actually help people around them relax, relieve exhaustion, improve focus and productivity, that sort of thing. Not only that, but we’ve found that people around them seem to be healthier.”

“Healthier?” The hostess asked.

“Yes. More precisely they are less likely to have difficulty dieting, other overweight people around them start losing weight and people seem to sleep better.”

“That’s amazing!” The host cried. “Sort of like how they bring dogs to universities and colleges around exam time to relieve stress.”

Doctor Hirasawa finally smiled. “I suppose they are similar in principle but that is merely psychological this is a biological function.”

“I see. It’s almost like they’re sucking up all the fat and fatigue from the people around them.” The host mused.

“Yes” the doctor agreed. “That’s not a bad way of putting it. Obviously they are not doing that literally but the social effects I mentioned earlier seem to have the effect of turning these people into what we’ve been calling ‘fat sinks’, like sponges they almost seem to take away the fat and fatigue from people around them. We believe that this is a social development that coincides with the biological adaptations.”

“You mean sorta like how ants in an ant hill have different jobs?” The hostess asked, a little confused.

“Almost. After all, adaptations are prompted by the environment that creatures, including humans, inhabit. Social functions and interactions are part of that environment, so it’s possibly that through some combination of factors, we developed these ‘fat sinks’ in response to the growing obesity rates across the world and all the unhealthy foods we’ve been eating in order to continue thriving as a species.”

The two hosts sat there for a moment, stunned and for once unable to give any kind of instant response or remark.

“Mind you, it’s still a theory at this point of course.” Hirasawa told them.

“I-I see.” The host gazed at the papers in front of him and then cleared his throat gently. “Well, what’s next then? What should our audience do about this?”

“Yeah, and how do you know if you’re one of these people.” The hostess asked.

“Well that’s one reason I came onto this program.” Doctor Hirasawa said. “We want people to come in who think they might be one of these people so that they can get the necessary information they need and so we can further our knowledge about them. After all we don’t know what kind of unique medical conditions that could befall these people.”

“Oh geez! Never thought of that.” The host admitted.

“Well that’s why we’ve opened a small clinic for people to come to and we now have a website.”

“Ah, that information should be appearing on screen now.” The hostess prompted. “So how will people know if they should come see you? Just being fat can’t be a good enough reason.”

“Certainly not.” The doctor replied with an amused smiled. “The most likely ones will be those who appear underdeveloped despite being adults or near adulthood. Also unusually rapid weight gain, improved performance and even sleep from eating lots of sweets. Just make an appointment and we’ll look you over. A simple blood test and physical is all we’ll need.”

“Ah that sounds easy enough.” The host said. “Well thank you for coming doctor, we appreciate you telling us all about this.”

“Not at all, it was my pleasure.”

“Well we’re going to take a commercial break now.” The hostess began. “But remember not to make fun of any of these kinds of people we were just talking about. Be really nice to them because they’re getting fat for your benefit! We’ll be right back.”

The commercials started but Aoba didn’t pay any attention to them, her mind was still mulling over everything that had just been said. Everything she heard pointed to her being one of those people that the doctor mentioned. Her rapid weight gain, her underdeveloped body, her improved productivity, all of it pointed to the obvious.

Finally she looked at her mother who was still staring at the TV with a stoic expression that made Aoba a little nervous.

“I’ll make you an appointment.” She said finally. “We need to find out for certain.”

Aoba swallowed and rubbed the underside of her belly. “S-sure.”

Her mother stood up and walked back towards the kitchen. “I’ll bring you more snacks in a minute.”

“Y-yeah…” Aoba uttered a tiny groan and stared back at the TV, suddenly feeling not terribly hungry.

The room echoed Nene’s grunts as she struggled to work her way into her shorts. All of her clothes had gotten tighter recently and these shorts were putting up the most dogged resistance yet.

“Come on, fit.” She gritted her teeth and with one last yank she managed to slide the shorts over her hips and bum. There were not especially tight now that they were on, but she wasn’t used to wearing tight clothes.

In addition to the shorts, Nene wore a blue tank top that showed the tiny bump in her middle. Her thighs now fully filled the leg holes of the shorts and her backside seemed to grow by the day, filling out her shorts and pressing outwards in a pair of round globes.

For a little over a week Nene and her classmates had been gathering together for frequent study sessions where there was abundant snacks and they all seemed eager to feed Nene all she could cram down her gullet. She would leave every session bloated and stuffed, but they were actually making progress.

Nene and everyone else seemed to be having an easier time with the classes as a result of these study sessions and Nene was actually having an easier time staying awake in class and lectures. Nene wasn’t sure that last part was a good thing because sleeping through classes and lectures sometimes made the day go by faster.

Finally dressed, Nene grabbed her shark themed school bag and headed downstairs.

“Oh, Nene!”

Nene paused at the bottom of the stairs and turned to face her mother who was sitting on the couch watching television.

“Yeah Mom?”

“I’m going to be making you a doctor’s appointment. I just learned about some kind of condition and I need to get you checked for it.”

Nene let out a high pitched whine and stuck out her lower lip in a pout. “But Mom, I don’t like getting checkups.”

“Nobody does, but you need them, especially this one. I’ll let you know what date it will be so you can plan accordingly.”

Nene shrunk a bit, knowing she had lost the argument she knew she had no help of winning anyway. She knew checkups were important but that didn’t make her like them anymore.

“I’m going out.” She said. “Be back later.”

Nene hurried out the door and began a half job towards the train station, towards her school friends, and towards a ton of sweets.

She licked her lips and her frown morphed into a smile. She couldn’t wait.
Aoba learns that she might not be so normal after all.

I dun goofed. This was supposed to be chapter 5. Hope you enjoy this and I'll work extra hard to finish Chapter 7 on time to upload it this weekend.
